Volunteer Opportunities

As discussed at the recent club (AGM) meeting, our club is managed and run by community members like you, and volunteers are needed! If there is an area where you can contribute, please contact myself or another board member. Below are some of the volunteer positions currently available.

Secretary:

In this role you report to the President.  Attend the monthly board meeting and the annual meeting.  Take the club minutes during the meetings.  Distribute the meeting minutes for review to the board.  Participates in the discussions of the club.

Field Liaison:

This role begins in the last week of August and runs through the middle of November.  We have roughly 8 fields in our system.  They consist of  Elementary schools like Somerset, Eastgate, Newport Heights, Ringdall, Tyee and Puesta.  Most of these fields are dirt.  In this role you will make sure that the city or school district puts the goals out for us to use, maintains the fields weekly by either mowing them or grading them, and communicate to the coaches to see that the fields are in the best condition possible for practices and games.  Occasionally you will drive around to check on the fields to make sure the goal nets are up and everything looks good.

– It would be possible to divide up some of the above responsibilities and therefore make is easier for more members to get involved. For instance, consider volunteering to regularly check on the condition of one field near where you live.

Recreational Equipment Coordinator:

This role begins the planning stages in June each year.  In this role you will provide equipment like soccer balls, soccer bags, pennies, and cones to the coaches each year from our inventory of equipment.  The Administrator will provide you a list of the volunteer coaches each year via email.  You will contact the coaches via email to see which coaches need either replacement gear or new gear for the season.  You will take inventory from our storage locker, located in Newcastle, and see what we have available to distribute to the coaches.  Whatever equipment is not available will be purchased at Soccer West with approval from the Executive Director.  Once you have the replacement equipment and new equipment organized, you will arrange the coaches to pick up the equipment either at your house, the storage locker or our pre-season coach meeting in August.

According to the current Equipment Coordinator, the time commitment is as follows:

“There are about 40 to 50 teams, and not all need equipment, but most will need something and some will need  to swap items and others will need everything.

I would say the time commitment is about  30 hours in the summer and early Fall buying, prepping and distributing equipment.  Then at the end of the season about 10 hours collecting, cleaning and sorting it back in inventory.  This includes multiple trips to the Soccer locker as returns trickle in over months.

I am probably underestimating the time it took me, but I bet someone else could be more efficient.”

NYSC welcomes new coach Hannah Kimsey

Newport Youth Soccer club is pleased to announce the addition of coach Hannah Kimsey to our coaching staff.

Our DOC Chuck Sekyra introduces Hannah:

“We are very excited to have a coach with Hannah’s background and experiences join our club. Hannah is going to be a wonderful role model and coach for our girls.  Just getting back from playing professionally in Europe I am thrilled that she wants to focus full time on coaching. She has a great upside.”

Hannah played at Portland State and Concordia University and was selected All American in 2012 and 2013 as well as achieving NAIA National Player of the year status in 2013. She has since played at the  semi-professional and professional level with the Sounders Women and Qbik Futbol club in the Swedish first division.

Most recently Hannah has coached with the Tualatin Hills Soccer Club in Portland.

Hannah will be coaching the girls U11 and U12 Select team for the 2016/17 season. Please join us in welcoming Hannah to our club.

USsoccer

US Soccer Federation mandated changes for 2016

Newport Soccer Families-

Looking ahead to next year, there are some changes coming that you have likely heard about. The US Soccer Federation (USSF) has mandated several changes to youth soccer that will be implemented across the country. NYSC and our sister clubs in EYSA have spent the past several months planning for these changes and how best to implement them.

The biggest impact will be to the age classification calendar. Teams will now be formed based on the calendar year rather than the school year. Historically, the birth date cutoff has been August 1. This will change to January 1. For example, last year’s BU12 Select team had 7 players born in 2003 and 7 players born in 2004. Under the new age groupings beginning in Fall 2016, BU14 will be for players born in 2003 and BU13 will be for players born in 2004. While players could simply register (or in the case of Select players) tryout for the team that corresponds with their age, it is possible that players will wish to stay together with their older teammates and “play up.” What this means is that (subject to making the team in case of Select players), there will be no club-wide or league prohibition against players born in 2004 playing on the BU13 team. Whether someone “makes” the team, however, is dependent on who tries out and who is ultimately selected (given that some of last year’s players born in January – August of 2013 will chose to play at their new age group).

Newport has adopted a simple “golden rule” for the first year: we will not require changes to existing Recreational or Select team rosters with returning players (although Select teams are still formed based on tryouts). We are essentially waiving all play-up restrictions so school class groups can remain intact, but teams would play to the age of their oldest player. Most clubs within EYSA are adopting this stance.

The other significant change will be to standardize the team and field sizes for age groups. The USSF has decided that small sided play should continue through U12, which will play 9v9 (currently 11v11).

We will be hosting an informational night on March 24 at the Newport Hills Swim and Tennis Club at 7pm as part of our Annual General Meeting. Come out and hear the latest developments and learn more about your club!

On behalf of the board and staff of Newport Soccer, I hope this season has been a fun and rewarding experience. We have made significant changes to the club over the past year and are excited about our progress and what lies ahead. Soon you will be receiving a survey from the club. Please take a few minutes and tell us what we are doing well and areas we can improve upon.
